Bobby Robson RIP

Sir Bobby Robson, the former England manager, has died, aged 76, after a long struggle against cancer.

Sir Bobby, who was in charge of the national team for eight years, guided England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

He made his playing debut in 1950 but was better known as a coach, managing Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, PC Porto and his beloved Newcastle United.

A statement issued on behalf of his family said: "It is with great sadness that it has been announced that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer.

"He died very peacefully this morning at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him.

"Sir Bobby's funeral will be private and for family members only. A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby's life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues.

"Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time."

Ray Wilkins, who played under Sir Bobby for England, said he was "absolutely devastated" at the news.

"He was an absolute gentlemen," he said in an interview with Sky News. "You don't come across people like Bobby very often.

"He lived his life with humility. He was a joy to be around."

On Sunday, a crowd of 33,000 turned out at St James' Park as a team including several of Sir Bobby's 1990 England squad took on a Germany XI to raise money for the former manager's own cancer charity.

Robson attended in a wheelchair and was introduced to both teams and presented with a Uefa lifetime achievement award before kick-off.

Former England star John Barnes played under Robson for both England and Newcastle.
Barnes, who played in Sunday's game, said: "People have flown in to play for Sir Bobby, that is the esteem in which he is held.

"He is a great man, a great football person, so enthusiastic."

Ashley Young ready to take next step for Aston Villa and England

Not just because he wants to secure a seat on the plane to South Africa with Fabio Capello's England team for the 2010 World Cup, but because he has a huge role to play in the fight Aston Villa face in continuing their improvement under manager Martin O'Neill. "It is a big year coming up," as Young put it.

It has been quite a 12 months for the 24-year-old, who won the Young Player of the Year award and who insists that the increased interest and exposure has not gone to his head - even the rave reviews of Martin O'Neill, who at one point likened him to Lionel Messi, or the speculation linking him with a high-profile move to clubs such as Chelsea and Real Madrid.

The transfer rumours have been a summer-long irritation for the club. Villa have continually stressed that they would reject any offer received, and Young has for his part responded by reminding everyone that he still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract. "I am a Villa player," he says. "I'm delighted to be playing at this club."

His re-affirmation of his commitment to the cause is a fillip to what has been a bit of a disappointing close season, especially given that O'Neill has yet to make more than one signing - Stewart Downing.

A shoulder injury to Stiliyan Petrov, who has flown home from the club's pre-season base in Spain, has merely compounded their pre-season difficulties. Villa are, however, still in the semi-finals of the Peace Cup, and should they defeat Porto on Friday night, face the rather thrilling possibility of playing either Juventus or Real Madrid in the final on Sunday night in Seville.

Young will relish the chance of competing against former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, another player with whom he has been compared, if they were to play Madrid.

However, happy to be likened to Real's Ronaldo in football terms, he explains that the Portuguese can keep the trimmings that come with superstardom to himself. "We are totally different," he says. "I like to keep myself to myself, and get on with playing football." A good job, too - if Villa are to compete this season they will need a Young without distractions.

Bayern Munich 0 Manchester United 0: Germans win 7-6 on penalties

Manchester United were handed their sternest test of the post Cristiano Ronaldo era by Bayern Munich and for the first time since the departure of the £80million man were found somewhat wanting.

Malaysian Select XIs are one thing but multiple European champions are quite another. And on this evidence, Sir Alex Ferguson still has plenty of questions to ponder with the start of the Barclays Premier League season just over a fortnight away.

One such question is how best to combine a strikeforce of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen. If United's pre-season games are anything to go by then it will be very much a case of one or the other when it comes to Rooney and Owen.

The former Everton player is sure to start more often than not, with Ferguson seemingly intent on reverting to a 4-4-2 formation with Ronaldo gone.

With 12 minutes of the Audi Cup final remaining, Ferguson made the now customary move of swapping Owen and Rooney. It means the pair have still to share a minute on the pitch for United this summer despite an impressive return of 23 goals in 29 appearances as partners for England.

Even Ferguson cannot have expected Owen to have had such an impressive impact during United's summer workouts as he looks to rebuild his fitness and reputation after a dismal, injury-ravaged spell with Newcastle.

But Bayern offered a much better barometer of how Owen is likely to fare in the Premier League than anything United faced in the Far East as the Germans carried off the Audi Cup 7-6 on penalties in front of 69,000 in the Allianz Arena.

Boca Juniors wins over AC Milan

Roberto Abbondanzieri made two saves to help Boca Juniors beat AC Milan 4-3 in a penalty shootout and take third place in the Audi Cup on Thursday.

The goalkeeper stopped shots from Andrea Pirlo and Alexandre Pato, who had also wasted several opportunities in regulation as the game ended 1-1. There was no extra time.

Thiago Silva scored for Milan in the 27th but Lucas Viatri tied the game in the 87th.

Federico Insua also had his penalty saved in the shootout but Viatri then converted for Boca for the decisive score before Pato's blunder.

Bayern Munich played Manchester United for the title later.

Dutch Super Cup history: the best moment of AZ Alkmaar

On Saturday, 25 July, AZ cruised past SC Heerenveen 5-1 in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Schaal, the Dutch Super Cup, the annual opener of the Dutch football season. AZ head coach Ronald Koeman had already won the trophy with Ajax in 2002.

The club from Alkmaar, 2008/2009 Eredivisie champions, won their first ever Dutch Super Cup.

According to Infostrada Sports, the 5-1 victory was the joint most one-sided. In 1993, Ajax crushed Feyenoord 4-0. No team had ever scored five times in a Dutch Super Cup match before AZ.

The six goals equalled the most productive JCS match. In 2004, FC Utrecht beat Ajax 4-2.

Elano goals: to Galatasaray from Manchester City

Elano has completed a move from Manchester City to the Turkish side Galatasaray. The Brazil midfielder had fallen out of favour with the City manager Mark Hughes, though he still scored eight goals in 42 appearances last season.

"Everyone at Manchester City would like to thank Elano for his services and wish him the very best of luck for the future with both his new club and with Brazil," read a statement on Manchester City's official website. The statement made no mention of a fee.

Elano had joined City from Shakhtar Donetsk prior to the 2007-08 season, and quickly became a popular figure among fans after a string of impressive performances. His form tailed off, however, and after replacing Sven-Goran Eriksson as the club's manager, Hughes soon lost patience with the midfielder's inconsistency.

In all Elano scored 18 goals in 80 appearances for City. He remains a regular member of the Brazil squad.

Andrew Driver will miss the start of the new season: Hearts suffer injury blow

Hearts winger Andrew Driver will miss the start of the season after being ruled out for up to six weeks with a heel injury.

Manager Csaba Laszlo said it was a blow to lose the 21-year-old.

Driver, who has been linked with a move to Burnley, will miss the league opener against Dundee United and his side's Europa League play-off first leg.

Laszlo has confirmed interest in Charlton striker Izale McLeod as he looks to bolster his attacking options.

"We know this player but there are two or three other targets, too," said Laszlo.

"We have two-and-a-half weeks before the season starts and we are trying to do something."

McLeod's prolific scoring record led Charlton to pay £1.1m for him in August 2007, but he has only scored once for the Addicks.

He spent the latter part of last season on loan at Millwall.

Hearts are looking to add to their attacking options after missing out on striker Adam Nemec, who chose to move to German side Kaiserslautern after leaving Racing Genk.

Thomas Muller goals confirmed Bayern Munich 4 AC Milan 1

Bayern Munich demolished AC Milan with a fine display of confident, attacking football on their first appearance at the Allianz Arena since Louis van Gaal took over.

Nineteen-year-old striker Thomas Muller grabbed a brace as the record German champions taught the Italians a lesson with a comfortable 4-1 win.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Saer Sene were also on target for Bayern with a free-kick from Andrea Pirlo Milan's only consolation.

Bayern will now meet Manchester United in the final of the Audi Cup tomorrow night with Milan contending third place with Boca Juniors.

Bayern took the game to their Italian opponents from the very beginning with Muller, the young revelation of their pre-season, terrorising Milan's experienced defender Alessandro Nesta, a man 14 years his senior.

He broke the deadlock after 12 minutes with a predatory finish that his legendary namesake Gerd Muller would have been proud of to conclude a fluid team move.

Hamit Altintop slotted the ball through for Jose Ernesto Sosa, who dragged the ball back from the goalline for Muller to sidefoot in from point-blank range.

Mario Gomez had a string of opportunities to add to the early lead, but he was unable to put the finishing touch to another impressive team move which involved Philipp Lahm and Muller on the half-hour mark.

Gomez then nicked a Daniel Pranjic cross just wide of the far post from close range with Nesta in close attention as Bayern tore Milan to shreds, albeit without converting their dominance into goals.

At the other end, Giuseppe Favalli did find the back of the net a minute before the break but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The hosts continued to take the game to their guests, who were clearly suffering after a tiring tour of the USA came to an end only early yesterday morning.

Half-time substitute Schweinsteiger inspired Gomez to another chance which he dragged just wide of Marco Storari's goal while on the stretch while Thiago Silva almost put the ball in his own goal as he cut out a low cross from Lahm.

There was another flash of danger at the other end with Martin Demichelis heading over the crossbar as his team mates just looked on believing the ball had already gone out of play.

Schweinsteiger then grabbed a deserved second goal for Bayern with a touch of individual skill.

He left Gennaro Gattuso, Massimo Oddo and Kakha Kaladze all on the floor before placing his shot calmly past Storari into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

A goalkeeping error by Hans-Jorg Butt allowed Milan an unexpected route back into the game less than two minutes later.

He flapped at Pirlo's 25-yard free-kick and could only push the ball into the roof of his own goal.

But a grandstand finish enabled Bayern to move comfortably into tomorrow's final against Manchester United.

Young substitute Sene, making his first ever appearance in the first team just 24 hours after scoring the equaliser for Bayern's reserves in their third division match, opened his account for the club in style.

His initial shot was saved by Storari, but the ball fell for Muller, Sene's former team mate in the youth team, who unselfishly laid the ball back into the 22-year-old's path, giving him an easy tap-in from close range.

And there was another tap-in for Muller in the last minute from Alexander Baumjohann's cross to complete a deserved rout of the Rossoneri.

Antonio Valencia scores in Manchester United-Boca Juniors

Antonio Valencia took the first small step towards replacing Cristiano Ronaldo by scoring on his first appearance in a Manchester United shirt this evening, but he shared the limelight with Anderson, whose goal in the 2-1 win over Boca Juniors in the Allianz-Arena was his long-awaited first for the club.

Anderson’s goal will not go down in the statistical archives, given that the Audi Cup semi-final is not recognised as a competitive fixture, but, after 75 competitive appearances without a goal since his arrival from FC Porto two years ago, the Brazil midfield player marked his excellent 23rd-minute free kick with a celebratory dance – not, thankfully, by running around the pitch naked, as he had claimed he would when he finally got off the mark.

Valencia, the £16 million signing from Wigan Athletic, made it 2-0 three minutes before half-time, his pace taking him behind the full-back before he scored with a shot that squirmed under Roberto Abbondanzieri, the Boca goalkeeper. The Ecuador winger made a pleasing contribution in his first outing in a United shirt, having been unable to join his new team-mates20on their pre-season tour of Asia due to problems obtaining a visa, while Wayne Rooney was unstinting as he played the full 90 minutes of the game.

Federico Insua pulled a goal back for Boca with a fine volley early in the 55th minute, but United, while still feeling their way towards full fitness with over a fortnight to go before the start of the Premier League campaign, held on to secure their fifth win in as many pre-season games. Nemanja Vidic, who missed the Asia tour with an ankle injury, remained on the bench throughout, while Craig Cathcart, Fabio Da Silva and Federico Macheda picked up some valuable match experience.
The only sour note on the evening for United was the sight of Wes Brown limping off in the first half with what looked like a blow to his left thigh. With Gary Neville and Rafael Da Silva already sidelined by injuries, Ferguson will be hoping that Brown’s latest injury is not serious. United will contest the final on Thursday evening against the winners of Wednesday’s second game between Bayern Munich and AC Milan.

Real Madrid to sign Alvaro Arbeloa

Spain defender Alvaro Arbeloa passed his medical with Real Madrid on Wednesday and is set to sign a five-year contract and complete his move from Liverpool.

"The results of every test are very satisfactory," Dr. Carlos Diez said. "He is delighted about playing for Real Madrid. It's always been his dream. He can't wait to join his teammates."

The 26-year-old Arbeloa's transfer will cost Madrid 3.5 million pounds ($5.7 million) as he becomes the club's seventh offseason signing, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol, Alvaro Negredo and Esteban Granero.

Arbeloa, who was part of the Spain squad that won the 2008 European championship, was with Madrid as a youngster before moving to Deportivo La Coruna in 2006 and then onto Liverpool six months later.

The right back was in the final year of his Liverpool contract, having moved to Anfield for 2.6 million pounds in January 2007. He played 99 games for the English club and scored two goals.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has already spent 17.5 million pounds on England right back Glen Johnson, who is expected to take Arbeloa's place in the side.

Liverpool also has Swiss international Philipp Degen back after rib and lung injuries. Jamie Carragher has also filled in effectively at right back.

Argentina defender Sorin announces retirement

Veteran World Cup defender Juan Pablo Sorin is retiring from football after a lackluster stint with Brazilian club Cruzeiro.

The 33-year-old left back ended his 15-year career at a press conference on Tuesday.

"I'm done with football," Sorin said. "It was a beautiful career which I enjoyed a lot and always tried to give my best, give all I had. It was a short career, but I think it's time to stop while I'm still doing well."

Sorin, who played for Argentina in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, was plagued by injuries with Cruzeiro and played sparingly recently.

"I didn't have the effect I hoped for," Sorin said. "I played only six matches in seven months, that's not a lot. I'm not proud of these numbers."

Sorin was with Germany's Hamburg when he had right knee surgery in May 2007 and played only once afterward. Then he signed last year with Cruzeiro for the third time in his career.

He arrived hoping a good performance would help him return to the Argentine national team, for which he scored 12 goals in 76 matches since his debut in 1995. But injuries gave him no chance.

"It's a conscientious decision," Sorin said. "It was not done in the spur of the moment. I have been thinking about quitting for quite some time."

Sorin said the thought of retirement began in May after he sustained a right thigh muscle injury that kept him from playing in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

He said one of the reasons he returned to Cruzeiro was to help the team do well in the Latin American competition, but he couldn't recover in time and eventually missed the final in which Cruzeiro lost the title to Argentina's Estudiantes.

Sorin first played for the Brazilian club from 2000 to 2002, helping the two-time Copa Libertadores champion win the Brazilian Cup and the regional Copa Sul-Minas. After playing in Italy, Spain and France, he returned for a short stint in 2004 before moving to Spain's Villarreal and then Hamburg.

Sorin previously played for Italy's Juventus and Lazio, Spain's Barcelona, France's Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina's River Plate and Argentinos Juniors.

Audi Cup 2009: Bayern face up to acid test against Milan, Man U and Boca Juniors

In a veritable who's who of world football, Intercontinental Cup-winning foursome AC Milan, Manchester United, Boca Juniors and hosts Bayern contest the Audi Cup 2009 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday and Thursday, but the stakes for Louis van Gaal and his team are far higher than simply adding another piece of silverware to the already glittering Säbener Strasse trophy cabinet.

For Munich, the real significance of the prestige event is as a final dress rehearsal for Sunday's DFB Cup first round tie away to Neckarelz. "We've only had three and a half weeks in pre-season. I'm piecing a team together, so I have to regard the tournament as a warm-up for Sunday," explained van Gaal: "Sunday is the more important game." In that match, Bayern intend to make the second round convincingly against their sixth-tier opponents.

All change in Milan
Wednesday's semi-finals in the Audi Cup, staged to mark the centenary of FCB's premium automotive partner, feature Bayern against Milan and United against Boca. Some 70 reporters turned out to hear all four coaches address a news conference at the official team hotel, the Westin Grand Munich Arabellapark, on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're just back from a tour of the USA and my players are certainly a little weary. But we're delighted to be taking part in this high-quality tournament," said Milan coach Leonardo. The Brazilian goes into his first season as Rossoneri boss without superstar Kaka, who was allowed to leave for Real Madrid in the summer. "We're rebuilding here in Milan, but even without Kaka we have a good team," said Leonardo, who has succeeded Chelsea-bound Carlo Ancelloti.

90 minutes each for Butt and Rensing

"I hope the crowd will enjoy watching these top teams, but I hope they recognise we're all still in pre-season," commented Van Gaal. Bayern's opponents Milan have indeed only just reported back from summer vacation, as the Serie A season does not recommence until the end of August. "Bayern will probably be in better shape than us tomorrow," offered Leonardo. "Milan are a top team. I'm intrigued to see how we get on against them at this stage," countered Van Gaal.

The Bayern coach will use the games to continue his team's bedding-in process, and also come to final decisions regarding one or two starting positions for Sunday. "All the players will have the same amount of playing time, but I won't mix things up at this stage, because I need my team to settle down," the Dutch boss said. Jörg Butt will keep goal on one day and Michael Rensing on the other, Van Gaal revealed. Franck Ribéry, Luca Toni and Ivica Olic are all sidelined with injury.

Van Gaal's debut at the Allianz Arena
The tournament offers Allianz Arena debuts for Van Gaal, and for new signings Danijel Pranjic, Edson Braafheid, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Alexander Baumjohann and Mario Gomez. "The Audi Cup is the highlight of pre-season," commented the Germany international striker, "it's the perfect acid test, before it really gets serious for the first time at the weekend.
We're ready for it."

Tournament schedule
Wednesday:
6.30 pm: Manchester United - Boca Juniors
8.45 pm: Bayern - AC Milan

Thursday:
6.30 pm: Third-place play-off
8.45 pm: Final.

All matches 45 minutes each way.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: “I’ll become an even better player”

In his first interview with Barça TV as a Barça player, Ibrahimovic assures the fans that he will become an “even better player” in a club like Barça.

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic speaks, he means what he says. He avoids clichés as if they were defenders and addresses each subject with a confidence that makes his words convincing. Here is the interview he has given to Barça TV and which will be broadcast in full at 10 pm tonight (Tuesday) on the programme ‘Bevingut Ibrahimovic’ (Welcome Ibrahimovic).

How did it feel being presented in the Camp Nou?

Monday was a really busy day. First the medical, then after lunch I signed a very important contract that has made a lot of people happy, then came the presentation. It’s difficult to put into words what I felt. These are emotions that can’t be described. You had to be there to understand what I felt.

Are you nervous about everything that has happened?

I was a bit nervous because everyone said there were a lot of people there. Normally I’m quite relaxed but for me it’s a dream to come here. This is where I wanted to play. I made an agreement with the president of Inter that the only club they could sell me to was Barcelona. The others could ask but they wouldn’t get a reply. The only one I answered was Barça. That gives me a special feeling. The move from Malmö to Ajax was good, I was happy. From Ajax to Juve was an important move but emotionally it was a normal event. I thought I would have to keep on playing. The transfer from Juve to Inter seemed like an important fact but it didn’t change my mood…In contrast, this transfer has made me feel nervous.

Nervous…why?

Barça has a historic tradition. Everyone wants to be part of this great club, they’ve made history and I want to be part of that history. For me Barça plays football the way other teams will play in ten years’ time. The way they play is the way I want to play and I believe the people that go to the stadium really enjoy this football and 50% of football is the fans.

What do you know about the history of Barça and its players?

Some great stars have played for Barça. Ronaldo, Romario, Stoichkov, Hagi, Maradona, Ronaldinho..., they’re great names. Everyone knows them and becoming a part of that history is one of my objectives. Everyone wants to come to Barça but not just anyone can do that.

Will you fit into the Barça style?

I think I’ll fit in really well because it’s the way I want to play, the way I want to train, the way I want to learn, because this style of football is what I tasted at Ajax. It really suited me and I learned a lot.

Have you had good references from people that know Barça?

Everyone I’ve spoken to has spoken positively. I spoke to Larsson, Figo, Koeman... everyone I spoke to spoke really well of Barça. Nobody said anything negative, everyone agreed that if you get the chance to come here then take it. Mentally, I was already with Barça when I received news of the Club’s interest. This Club won three titles last season, everything that could be won. When you win you don’t sign, you continue. And then for the next season they come to you and tell you that they want to sign you. Normally a club that wins everything doesn’t buy. When they come to you it’s something special. It means a lot and I’m here to continue winning titles.

Will this be the contract of your life?

I want to enjoy the moment. I’m here to enjoy myself and learn. I want to play with the best, and the best team is Barcelona. I want to be an even better player, and I know I will become even better, but you have to work hard and have the best players around you. A better environment than this is impossible.

You’ve spoken to Guardiola. What did he say to you?

He was very happy about everything that’s been done and I’m also very happy that it’s all official now. Guardiola said he’s happy if I’m happy and that the rest will come by itself.

You are a very technical forward. Normally that kind of player is pretty individualistic but your profile is that of a team player.

It’s one of my qualities that I learned in Italy. It’s important to know how to play as part of a team. If you don’t play as part of the team it’s impossible to achieve the objectives that your club is looking for. You have to help your team-mates and your team-mates have to help you. It’s also true that there are players that have the quality of playing in a more individualistic way and that’s also good. Everyone has to use his talents.

Kolo Toure could leave Arsenal to City

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Kolo Toure could leave Arsenal to join Manchester City in the next 24 hours.

The 28-year-old defender played for Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Hungary last night but it is thought he is now close to completing a deal, thought to be in the region of £14 million, to move to Eastlands.

Toure would become Manchester City's fifth acquisition of the close season after Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tévez and Emmanuel Adebayor, who was also signed from Arsenal, and would take City's summer spending towards the £100m mark. City are also hopeful for a breakthrough in their efforts to sign Joleon Lescott from Everton.

Wenger has confirmed talks are ongoing and said the picture would be clearer tomorrow. "We will see what's happening in the next 24 hours, nothing is decided yet," he said. "We have seven centre-backs and I am in the position where I have to play some in midfield but of course Kolo is a very good player and we will see what will happen."

Arsenal have signed central defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax and Wenger hinted that he will make more signings before the transfer window closes. "I am more focused on getting everybody fit for the start of the season but we are looking at opportunities as well, there are still some pre-season games to see what we really need. When the time comes we will do something."

U.S. Finishes Second in 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup After Falling to Mexico at Giants Stadium

Loss marks End to Impressive Run During the Summer Which Included Appearances in Final of Confederations Cup and Gold Cup

U.S. Falls to Mexico in the United States for the First Time in 12 Matches Spanning 10 Years

Rivals Meet Again in Two Weeks When U.S. Seeks First Win Ever in Mexico's Estadio Azteca on Aug. 12 as World Cup Qualifying Resumes

FIFA President Joseph "Sepp" Blatter Tours New Meadowlands Stadium Next to Giants Stadium Before Match

Playing in their second final of a major international tournament in two months, the U.S. Men’s National Team fell to Mexico this afternoon in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup in front of a sell out crowd of 79,156 at Giants Stadium.

After a memorable run to the final of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, U.S. head coach Bob Bradley called in a group consisting of mainly young and untested players that produced an impressive winning streak of their own during the Gold Cup, successfully advancing to the team’s third consecutive Gold Cup final and seventh appearance overall. During the tournament, the U.S. saw seven players earn their first cap and six players score their first goal in a U.S. jersey.

Playing their 13th game in 54 days, the U.S. had the better of play in the first half against Mexico, but in the 55th minute Jamaican referee Courtney Campbell awarded Mexico a penalty kick that shifted the momentum. After Gerardo Torrado’s conversion, the U.S. pushed forward in hopes of the equalizer and Mexico was able to capitalize with four more goals in for a 5-0 victory.

The loss to Mexico ended the USA’s 11-game unbeaten streak on U.S. soil against their archrival dating back to 1999, and was the team’s first loss to a CONCACAF opponent at home in 58 matches.

The match is the first of two meetings between the rivals in a three-week span, as Bradley will call on the first team when FIFA World Cup qualifying resumes with a match on Aug. 12 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

“There’s no doubt that you want competitors and we are competitors,” Bradley said. “The second half for us is not what we're all about. When you have a game that feels like this at the end you don’t forget it. It’s something that we will always on the inside talk about, be honest about, and hopefully we can use it in a way that we’re better from it today.”

Our focus now is on playing Mexico in Azteca during World Cup qualifying. We start over on that day and have a chance to do something the U.S. hasn’t done before.”

Hot and humid conditions and a soft turf combined for a measured pace to start the game, but as the minutes passed the U.S. settled in nicely. The first decent chance came in the14th minute off a Stuart Holden corner kick. Clarence Goodson had his shirt held throughout the run, barely missing a header. The rebound led to a scramble in the area where Brian Ching nearly won the scrum, but the ball deflected out for another U.S. corner.

After the quarter hour, the U.S. began to find space down the flanks, serving numerous cross into the Mexican penalty area. At the other end, the backline stood solid in dealing with the limited forays of Mexico into the attack, while midfield pressure contained Mexico’s efforts to find any rhythm.

In the 28th minute, a quick counterattack gave the U.S. a numerical advantage heading to goal, with Robbie Rogers leading the charge. Cutting inside, he slid a square pass to Holden, who teed up from 22 yards, sending a low screamer wide of the right post.

Pace quickened in the opening minutes of the second half as Carlos Vela came on to join the Mexico attack and, along with dos Santos, gave the weary U.S. defense fits. Both teams aggressively pursued attacks to goal, but it was the U.S. starting the second half with their best chance of the game. In the 48th minute a Holden floater to the back post was controlled by Rogers with a trap. He hit a rising half-volley that sailed just over the cross bar.

The turning point came in the 56th minute when Giovani dos Santos received the ball in the area with his back to goal, and drew a penalty as he flailed backward while elbowing Heaps, who briefly grabbed his jersey. Torrado converted the opportunity to give Mexico a 1-0 lead.

The U.S. immediately tried to get forward to equalize, and Mexico responded with two consecutive chances to double the lead, with Troy Perkins making point-blank saves to keep the U.S. chances alive.

In the 62nd minute, though, Mexico took a 2-0 advantage. Defeating an offside trap, Vela came in alone on the left side. As Goodson closed, Vela tapped the ball to Miquel Sabeh – the top scorer at the 2009 Gold Cup – and Perkins was called to make a third straight save. The rebound fortuitously bounced right into the path of a crashing dos Santos, who drove the ball into the empty net.

Five minutes later, dos Santos choreographed another Mexico goal. Torrado used an elbow to keep Kyle Beckerman off a 50-50 ball near midfield and turned the ball up field where he found dos Santos. As he dribbled through the middle, he found Vela making a 60-yard run with Heaps trailing. A perfect through ball to Vela set up a perfect chip over Perkins for the Arsenal midfielder that Goodson couldn’t catch up to keep out of the goal.

Two more Mexico goals came down the stretch, the first in the 79th minute. Heath Pearce let Jose Antonio Castro go as he crossed the U.S. backline and Vela slipping a perfect pass through. Alone on goal with Perkins charging, Castro found the lower right corner of the net.

In the final minute, Guillermo Franco closed out the scoring after Heaps was sent off for his second yellow card. Johnny Magallon, who, before Sunday, was one of only three Mexico players to score against the U.S. on U.S. soil this decade – played the ball up the left wing vacated by Heaps where Fausto Pinto could dribble forward. He squared the ball to Franco who had plenty of time to pick out the near post from 19 yards out.

With the victory, Mexico moves back ahead of the U.S. in Gold Cups won, with a 5-4 advantage after the U.S. closed the gap with titles at the 2005 and 2007 events. The next CONCACAF Gold Cup will be played in 2011, when a berth at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup will again be on the line.

The defeat was the worst by the U.S. since a 5-0 loss to England in Los Angeles on June 16, 1985. Mexico’s win on U.S. soil was their first against the Americans since a 2-1 win on March 13, 1999. Between defeats, Mexico posted a 0-9-2 record. The match was the 46th meeting in the rivalry, and the largest margin of victory since a 7-2 by Mexico on April 28, 1957, in Long Beach, Calif., and the first time a team scored five goals against the United States since Czechoslovakia won by a 5-1 margin in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Before the game, FIFA President Joseph “Sepp” Blatter scored the first-ever goal in the New Meadowlands Stadium as he toured the facility with executives from the U.S. Soccer Federation and the USA Bid Committee.

USA Bid Committee Executive Director David Downs, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati, U.S. Soccer CEO and General Secretary Dan Flynn and Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber welcomed Blatter, who was accompanied by CONCACAF President Jack Warner and FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke to the new 82,500-seat stadium, which will open in May 2010 and serve as one of the jewel venues proposed in the U.S. bid to bring the FIFA World Cup to the United States in 2018 or 2022.

Mark Lamping, CEO of the New Meadowlands Stadium, served as host to the executives from FIFA, U.S. Soccer and the USA Bid Committee. Though the $1.6 billion stadium is still well under construction, Lamping and his associates arranged for the installation of a fully-sodded penalty area and a goal where both will ultimately be located for soccer matches. It was there that Blatter was asked to score the first goal in the new stadium. The ball will be later displayed in a place of honor in the stadium’s museum.

Commemorative balls were later presented to Blatter, Valcke and Warner, who is also a FIFA vice president as well as the president of CONCACAF, The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, of which the United States is a member.

Ryan Giggs tips Michael Owen to be Manchester United's new Ruud van Nistelrooy

Ryan Giggs believes Michael Owen provides Manchester United with the kind of out-and-out striker they have not had since Ruud van Nistelrooy left for Real Madrid and is confident the former Newcastle United player will improve the balance and potency of the team's attack.

Although Giggs acknowledges that the real tests for Owen are yet to come, he is encouraged by the four goals the forward scored in as many games during United's tour of east Asia.

This week's Audi Cup in Munich, in which United face Boca Juniors and either Bayern Munich or Milan, should give a fairer indication of how one of Sir Alex Ferguson's most unexpected signings will begin the campaign. Only in Seoul – the one game in which he did not find the net – did Owen encounter serious opposition. Nevertheless, Giggs is convinced the 29-year-old can improve United's attack.

"I don't think there was any real scepticism among the players about his arrival. The manager explained that he provides something we haven't got," said Giggs. "Kiko [Federico Macheda] is probably the most like Michael in the sense that he is an out-and-out goalscorer but he is still very young. Wayne and Dimitar Berbatov do things outside the box.

"Michael is a pure predator and that is something we have not really had since Ruud left. Before that we had Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but our chances-to-conversion rate was not so good last season and Michael should improve that. He is a poacher who scores all types of goals. They all come from inside the box – that's where he does his work and that is where he comes alive."

In his five years at Old Trafford, Van Nistelrooy never once found the net from outside the area and Giggs detects other similarities. "The good thing about Michael over the years is that if he misses a chance, it doesn't bother him one bit. That's what great goalscorers do – they are always convinced they will get another chance. Ruud had that same mentality too."

Should Owen start the season in this kind of form, even the cold-eyed Fabio Capello, who began his reign as England manager sceptical about a man who has scored 40 times at international level, might just bring him back. Owen has not played since Capello's last defeat – a 1–0 friendly reverse against France in March 2008 – but is still prepared to back himself to overcome Sir Bobby Charlton's tally of 49 goals.

"I am sure if he is playing and scoring for United, the rest will come," said Giggs.
"But looking at his goals-to-games ratio, if he gets another 15 internationals, then he will probably overtake Sir Bobby."

Arsenal linked to £13m Mirko Vucinic swoop with Nicklas Bendtner set for Roma

Arsenal have offered £13million plus Nicklas Bendtner for Roma striker Mirko Vucinic, according to reports in Italy.

The Gunners, eyeing a striker to replace Emmanuel Adebayor, have reportedly joined the queue of suitors for the Montenegro striker.

Vucinic recently said he had no interest in a mooted switch to Tottenham Hotspur and, while he has also been tracked by Manchester United and Chelsea, Roma have previously insisted there has been no formal approach for the 25-year-old.

Wenger is also keen on Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh and has also been linked to Real Madrid outcast Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. But he has now made his move for Vucinic, according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Roma need to sell to eat into their huge debts, but are keen to keep Vucinic and midfielder Daniele De Rossi, with Alberto Aquilani and Jeremy Menez preferred as players they are wishing to sacrifice.

Liverpool have lined up Aquilani, 25, as a replacement for Xabi Alonso, should the Spain midfielder leave for Real Madrid. And Marseille have been linked with a move for 22-year-old French forward Menez.

Kevin Thomson is back in Rangers squad

Thomson couldn't care less how well he played against FC Nuremberg - he was just thrilled to be back in action again after eight months out.

The midfielder made his comeback from a cruciate knee ligament injury yesterday when he came on in the second half of the 2-0 win at the Frankenstadion.

Thomson completed the final 30 minutes and the sight of him in a Light Blues jersey once more was fantastic for the travelling fans in Germany.

Even though he was quiet when he appeared against the Bundesliga outfit, the 24-year-old was simply happy to be in the thick of it.

Thomson said: "It was good to be back. When the subs were warming up at half-time, the manager told me not to bother and to do it at the start of the second half instead.

"I knew then that I was going to get on but waiting for it lasted for ages - I've never looked at a clock so often in all my life!

"That 15-minute warm-up felt like it lasted about four hours but I finally got the shout from Kenny McDowall with about 56 or 57 minutes gone.

"It was nice to get on for the last half hour and my performance wasn't that great but it was just great to be back out there again.

"I'm a wee bit disappointed I didn't get more involved in the game than I did because I'd have liked to do that.

"I'm the type of player that puts high demands on myself but I know that after being out for almost nine months, I wasn't going to hit the ground running.

"I ran about and managed to get a few touches of the ball - I gave it away a few times too but I'm just absolutely delighted to be playing again.

"Now I've got my first game out of the way and I hope that can be the launchpad for a good pre-season.

"I hope to be involved again when we play SC Wiedenbruck on Tuesday. The trip has been a bit stop-start and my knee has been a wee bit puffy as a result.

"But we'll keep icing my knee up, take every precaution possible and hopefully I'll be able to get some more minutes under my belt."

Eto'o arrives to Milan for Inter switch

Samuel Eto'o arrived in Milan on Monday to complete his transfer to Inter in a swap deal which sends Zlatan Ibrahimovic to his former club Barcelona.

The Cameroon international will reportedly sign a five-year contract worth almost $15 million per season at the current Serie A champions.

Eto'o is undergoing a medical in Milan before being officially unveiled, but is already looking forward to the new season.

He was also delighted that his new team had made a good start to pre-season with a 2-0 win over arch-rivals AC Milan in a friendly tournament in the United States on Sunday.

"Compliments to my teammates, who have already won the first derby," he added.
Eto'o was top scorer for treble-winning Barcelona last season with 34 goals, but annoyed the Spanish giants while being courted by English club Manchester City.
Coach Pep Guardiola later stated it would be best for the club if the player left despite him having been offered a new contract.

Eto'o will leave the Nou Camp as the fourth highest goalscorer in the club's history and netted in both finals as Barcelona won the Champions League in 2006 and 2009.
Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb is also coming to Inter as part of the deal, with the Italian giants also receiving a reported $46 million as compensation for losing a striker who led the Serie A scoring charts last season.

Meanwhile, Swedish international Ibrahimovic is due to travel to Barcelona on Monday to complete the formalities of his deal with the Catalan giants.

Di Santo, Malouda score for Chelsea in 2-0 win

Franco Di Santo and Florent Malouda each set the other up for a goal in the span of two minutes in the second half to lead Chelsea to a 2-0 win over Club America on Sunday in the final game of the World Football Challenge.

Malouda took a pass from Ashley Cole and chipped it in front of the goal, where DiSanto beat Club America goalkeeper Armando Navarrete to the ball and knocked it into the net in the 76th minute.

Two minutes later, DiSanto beat defender Oscar Rojas, and dropped a ball back to Malouda, who fired it past Navarrete from about 12 yards out.

Chelsea went undefeated in winning the four-team, round robin-style tournament. Club America was second, one point ahead of Inter Milan. AC Milan finished fourth.

Inter Milan 2 - AC Milan 0: Diego Milito goals far from home

Diego Milito scored twice to lead Inter Milan to a 2-0 victory over AC Milan on Sunday in an exhibition that was just the third match the bitter intracity rivals have ever played outside Italy.

The crowd of 42,531 leaned heavily toward AC Milan, and they were quieted in the fourth minute when Milito chased the ball down to the left of the goal and left-footed it between the goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac and the near post. He gave Inter a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute on a 2-on-1 break with Dejan Stankovic, who drew the defender and passed to Milito for the shot that bounced off and over the keeper into the net.

The clubs that share a home in foggy San Siro had met outside Italy only twice: in Chiasso, Switzerland, in 1908 and at Yankee Stadium in 1969. But they came to the United States as part of an exhibition tournament known as the World Football Classic.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid debut, not so good...

Cristiano Ronaldo produced only glimpses of his talent during his home debut for Real Madrid in a 1-1 draw with Al Ittihad on Sunday.

Ronaldo was substituted by Gonzalo Higuain in the 66th minute, immediately after Hicham Aboucherouane equalized for the Saudi Arabian champions in the Peace Cup. Raul Gonzalez gave Madrid the lead at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the 55th minute.

Madrid's new No. 9 came closest to his first Madrid goal just before halftime, when his shot was tipped around the post by goalkeeper Mabrouk Zaid after a swift exchange of passes with Karim Benzema.

Peter Crouch joins Harry Redknapp for a third time

Peter Crouch is expected to have a medical today to complete his move from Portsmouth to Tottenham Hotspur.

The fee is believed to be about £10 million and if the transfer is completed in time, the England forward has an outside chance of joining his new team-mates when they fly out for their pre-season tour to China today.

It is the fourth time that Crouch will have played under Redknapp. He managed the player at Southampton during his brief spell in charge there and paid £10 million to Liverpool to bring him to Portsmouth — the player’s second spell at Fratton Park — little more than a year ago. The South Coast club had agreed a £12 million fee with Sunderland earlier this summer but Crouch turned down the move.

His arrival at White Hart Lane — on a four-year contract — will raise eyebrows in certain quarters, but Redknapp left no doubt about his appreciation of the 6ft 7in forward after watching his team lose 2-0 against Celtic in the Wembley Cup yesterday.

Crouch has not been Tottenham’s first option, but he will cost about half the fee of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, whose £90,000-a-week wage demands have proved a stumbling block. Should the England international join, Redknapp would rekindle Crouch’s partnership with Jermain Defoe that was fashioned at Portsmouth a year ago.
Crouch has had six clubs and has now generated about £35 million in transfer fees since he first left Tottenham nine years ago.

“He is different because he can hold the ball up and we don’t do that well enough,” Redknapp said. “He gives me an option.”

Fulham had also been in the running, but Tottenham now hope the deal will be completed in time for Crouch to join Tottenham in China, where they play West Ham United on Wednesday and Hull City or Beijing Guoan in the Barclays Asia Trophy two days later.

Crouch’s arrival will signal the departure of Darren Bent, who could be on his way to Sunderland if a fee can be agreed. Tottenham’s £18 million valuation is about £6 million more than Sunderland have suggested. Bent, who was signed from Charlton Athletic for £16.5 million two years ago, is holding out for a better option such as Aston Villa. He has had little future at Tottenham since Redknapp joked that his wife could have scored with the kind of free header that the striker missed against Portsmouth in January.

Redknapp is awaiting Patrick Vieira’s decision after speaking to the France midfield player about a move. Vieira needs to agree a settlement with Inter Milan, where he has one year left on his contract. “It would be fantastic, but it probably won’t happen,” Redknapp said.

The need for another central defender appears more pressing in the absence of the injured trio of Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson. Pascal Chimbonda and Dorian Dervite showed their weaknesses in central defence against Celtic at Wembley yesterday. Both were ball-watching as an unmarked Chris Killen headed in Paul Caddis’s right-wing cross, and Georgios Samaras skipped past Dervite easily and fired past Heurelho Gomes as Chimbonda made no effort to come across.
“We’re short at the back,” Redknapp said. “I was disappointed that we gave away two terrible goals with poor defending.”
