Patrice Evra hails team strength

Pat insists United are more than capable of sustaining the success of recent seasons despite the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The Frenchman fully admits the club have lost two 'big players,' but, following the summer captures of Michael Owen, Gabriel Obertan and Antonio Valencia, he remains confident in the squad's ability to cope with the departures.

"They are two big players, but the star of the team is the team," declared the Reds' left-back. "Two players alone do not make a team. We have signed some good players and, like I say, Manchester United are a team and not only about two players.

"I can already see a good team coming along and we are all confident about doing well with this side as it is."

Five wins out of six thanks to some impressive displays during pre-season has given Evra further cause for optimism ahead of the new campaign.

"We worked really well in Asia and played some good games, it was a good trip," he insisted, when asked about United's four-game tour of the Far East.

"We are moving along bit by bit in preparation for our first match of the season on August 9 against Chelsea [in the Community Shield at Wembley].

"We want to at least defend the titles we won last season and try to win the Champions League."
