David Beckham Injured: Achilles Tendon Injury...No 2010 World Cup!

David Beckham will miss the World Cup and most if not all the Los Angeles Galaxy season after tearing his left Achilles' tendon Sunday while playing for AC Milan.

His international career for England is all but over. It remains to be seen how much he'll have left for the Galaxy and Major League Soccer.

"He will miss the World Cup for sure," a person familiar with the injury told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made. The person said it was likely the 34-year-old midfielder will play again.

Beckham was injured without getting hit during AC Milan's 1-0 Italian League win over visiting Chievo Verona. With only a few minutes remaining and the score 0-0, Beckham was by himself with the ball at his feet, shifted his weight and reached a hand down to his left heel. Beckham then stood up and snapped his wrists like he was breaking a twig in half in a gesture to show the AC Milan bench he knew the tendon was broken.

Visibly in pain and in tears, Beckham went to the sideline for medical attention, leaving Milan a man short because all three substitutes had been used. "He felt the muscle begin to come up, which is a typical symptom when you break an Achilles' tendon," Milan coach Leonardo told Sky. "This is a real blow."

Sky reported that Beckham said, 'It's broken, it's broken," when he came off. Club physician Jean Pierre Meersseman told Italy's Sky TV that Beckham will fly to Finland, where he will be treated by specialist surgeon Dr. Sakari Orava.

"He'll go to Finland tomorrow and will be operated on probably tomorrow afternoon or Tuesday morning," Meersseman said. While Beckham has not been a starter for England in recent matches, he was likely to make the World Cup roster as a reserve and looked forward to the high-profile June 12 matchup against the United States — and Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan. Although no longer a top player, Beckham was still useful for his free kicks and crosses, especially when England needed second-half goals.

And for many, he was the most-known soccer player in the world, a fashion icon with a celebrity wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. A 2002 movie was even named after him, "Bend it Like Beckham." The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was on his second loan stint to AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy as he looked to boost his chances of making England coach Fabio Capello's 23-man World Cup roster. With no chance to play in the World Cup, his international career is likely over after 17 goals and 115 appearances, second in English history behind only goalkeeper Peter Shilton's 125 matches from 1970-90.

Beckham was England's captain from November 2000 through the 2006 World Cup. He was due back with the Galaxy after the World Cup. "He'll probably be out for five or six months," AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani told Sky. "I saw him really suffering. In the changing room I hugged him and told him that if he wants he can join us next year, too."

It was yet another blow for Major League Soccer, already facing the threat of a players' strike ahead of the season opener on March 25. Beckham is the league's highest-paid player with a $32.5 million, five-year contract and its biggest draw. "We just received the information about David's unfortunate injury," MLS commissioner Don Garber said. "We wish him a speedy recovery."

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said it was too early to tell exactly how long Beckham will be out. He didn't want to discuss the impact the injury would have on Los Angeles' season. He wouldn't blame the injury on the loan.

"Players get hurt whether they're on loan or not," he said. "Injuries are unfortunately part of the game."

Capello and his England assistant Franco Baldini spoke with Beckham on the telephone to offer best wishes, according to British news agency The Press Association.

In April 2002, Beckham broke a bone in his left foot during a European Champions League game against Spain's Deportivo La Coruna. His injury and recovery were front-page news to fixated England fans.

England fell short in the 2002 World Cup and yet again in 2006, still hoping for its first title since 1966. Beckham returned Sunday to AC Milan's starting lineup after a reserve-appearance in Wednesday's 4-0 Champions League loss at Manchester United, his first match at Old Trafford against his old club since he left after the 2002-03 season. Beckham was treated Sunday for a deep cut to his right cheek following a collision early in the first half.

With the game scoreless, Beckham nearly scored in the 84th, but Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino stopped his close-range effort. "Beckham came here because he wanted to help Milan return to the top and he was looking to get a jersey for the national team and participate in the World Cup," Milan defender Gianluca Zambrotta said. "If other victories come, there will surely be a dedication for David Beckham."

Real Madrid - AC Milan preview: prepared for tomorrow's clash

Real Madrid and Milan will star in the most interesting Champions League game this week. The Whites had their final session this morning and Milan trained at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium at 19:00.

Real Madrid's morning session was followed by a press conference given by coach Manuel Pellegrini and Kaka.

Pellegrini selected 18 of his men for the match. They will meet at the stadium at 20:30 and will then set their team camp at Mirasierra Suites Hotel.

Milan are currently third in Group C behind the Whites and Zurich. The Italian team landed in Madrid at 12:10. The squad and coaching staff are staying at Villa Magna Hotel.

On Saturday, AC Milan host city rivals Internazionale in the Milan city derby. New signing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar can make his Serie A debut for AC Milan.

According to Infostrada Sports, the former Real Madrid striker can become the first Milan player since Alberto Paloschi in February 2008 to score on his Serie A debut for AC Milan. The last Dutch players to do so were Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten in September 1987.

Flavio Roma to join AC Milan from AS Monaco

Monaco goalkeeper Flavio Roma is set to join AC Milan after eight season in the French league.

The French first-division club said on its website Thursday that Roma will join Milan, but did not provide further details.

The 35-year-old Roma had one year left on his Monaco contract.

"Monaco and AC Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of Flavio Roma," Monaco said. "The Italian goalkeeper will take up a new challenge in the colors of the Lombardy club."

Roma played 247 games for Monaco, and was instrumental in the club's run to the Champions League final in 2004.

"Monaco wishes to thank Flavio for everything he did on the field, but also off it. He is a great professional," Monaco's sporting director Marc Keller said. "He will always be part of the club's history, and we wish him the best of luck with AC Milan."

Before joining Monaco, Roma played for Piacenza, Chievo, Foggia and Lazio, his first club.

Roma has played three times for Italy and won the League Cup with Monaco in 2003 under coach Didier Deschamps.

"Monaco will stay in my heart forever. It was the most important period of my career," Roma said. "I am taking up a new challenge with my ambition intact. I will do everything to succeed."

All of Real Madrid's stars will be presented before their fans in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy match between Real Madrid and Milan, to be held either on 24 or 25 August.

Tickets will be priced starting as low as 3 euros for Club Members and 6 euros (only 6 euros !!!) for the general public. European Season Ticket Holders will be able to see the game for free at the stadium presenting their season ticket.

Boca Juniors wins over AC Milan

Roberto Abbondanzieri made two saves to help Boca Juniors beat AC Milan 4-3 in a penalty shootout and take third place in the Audi Cup on Thursday.

The goalkeeper stopped shots from Andrea Pirlo and Alexandre Pato, who had also wasted several opportunities in regulation as the game ended 1-1. There was no extra time.

Thiago Silva scored for Milan in the 27th but Lucas Viatri tied the game in the 87th.

Federico Insua also had his penalty saved in the shootout but Viatri then converted for Boca for the decisive score before Pato's blunder.

Bayern Munich played Manchester United for the title later.

Thomas Muller goals confirmed Bayern Munich 4 AC Milan 1

Bayern Munich demolished AC Milan with a fine display of confident, attacking football on their first appearance at the Allianz Arena since Louis van Gaal took over.

Nineteen-year-old striker Thomas Muller grabbed a brace as the record German champions taught the Italians a lesson with a comfortable 4-1 win.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Saer Sene were also on target for Bayern with a free-kick from Andrea Pirlo Milan's only consolation.

Bayern will now meet Manchester United in the final of the Audi Cup tomorrow night with Milan contending third place with Boca Juniors.

Bayern took the game to their Italian opponents from the very beginning with Muller, the young revelation of their pre-season, terrorising Milan's experienced defender Alessandro Nesta, a man 14 years his senior.

He broke the deadlock after 12 minutes with a predatory finish that his legendary namesake Gerd Muller would have been proud of to conclude a fluid team move.

Hamit Altintop slotted the ball through for Jose Ernesto Sosa, who dragged the ball back from the goalline for Muller to sidefoot in from point-blank range.

Mario Gomez had a string of opportunities to add to the early lead, but he was unable to put the finishing touch to another impressive team move which involved Philipp Lahm and Muller on the half-hour mark.

Gomez then nicked a Daniel Pranjic cross just wide of the far post from close range with Nesta in close attention as Bayern tore Milan to shreds, albeit without converting their dominance into goals.

At the other end, Giuseppe Favalli did find the back of the net a minute before the break but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The hosts continued to take the game to their guests, who were clearly suffering after a tiring tour of the USA came to an end only early yesterday morning.

Half-time substitute Schweinsteiger inspired Gomez to another chance which he dragged just wide of Marco Storari's goal while on the stretch while Thiago Silva almost put the ball in his own goal as he cut out a low cross from Lahm.

There was another flash of danger at the other end with Martin Demichelis heading over the crossbar as his team mates just looked on believing the ball had already gone out of play.

Schweinsteiger then grabbed a deserved second goal for Bayern with a touch of individual skill.

He left Gennaro Gattuso, Massimo Oddo and Kakha Kaladze all on the floor before placing his shot calmly past Storari into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

A goalkeeping error by Hans-Jorg Butt allowed Milan an unexpected route back into the game less than two minutes later.

He flapped at Pirlo's 25-yard free-kick and could only push the ball into the roof of his own goal.

But a grandstand finish enabled Bayern to move comfortably into tomorrow's final against Manchester United.

Young substitute Sene, making his first ever appearance in the first team just 24 hours after scoring the equaliser for Bayern's reserves in their third division match, opened his account for the club in style.

His initial shot was saved by Storari, but the ball fell for Muller, Sene's former team mate in the youth team, who unselfishly laid the ball back into the 22-year-old's path, giving him an easy tap-in from close range.

And there was another tap-in for Muller in the last minute from Alexander Baumjohann's cross to complete a deserved rout of the Rossoneri.

Audi Cup 2009: Bayern face up to acid test against Milan, Man U and Boca Juniors

In a veritable who's who of world football, Intercontinental Cup-winning foursome AC Milan, Manchester United, Boca Juniors and hosts Bayern contest the Audi Cup 2009 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday and Thursday, but the stakes for Louis van Gaal and his team are far higher than simply adding another piece of silverware to the already glittering Säbener Strasse trophy cabinet.

For Munich, the real significance of the prestige event is as a final dress rehearsal for Sunday's DFB Cup first round tie away to Neckarelz. "We've only had three and a half weeks in pre-season. I'm piecing a team together, so I have to regard the tournament as a warm-up for Sunday," explained van Gaal: "Sunday is the more important game." In that match, Bayern intend to make the second round convincingly against their sixth-tier opponents.

All change in Milan
Wednesday's semi-finals in the Audi Cup, staged to mark the centenary of FCB's premium automotive partner, feature Bayern against Milan and United against Boca. Some 70 reporters turned out to hear all four coaches address a news conference at the official team hotel, the Westin Grand Munich Arabellapark, on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're just back from a tour of the USA and my players are certainly a little weary. But we're delighted to be taking part in this high-quality tournament," said Milan coach Leonardo. The Brazilian goes into his first season as Rossoneri boss without superstar Kaka, who was allowed to leave for Real Madrid in the summer. "We're rebuilding here in Milan, but even without Kaka we have a good team," said Leonardo, who has succeeded Chelsea-bound Carlo Ancelloti.

90 minutes each for Butt and Rensing

"I hope the crowd will enjoy watching these top teams, but I hope they recognise we're all still in pre-season," commented Van Gaal. Bayern's opponents Milan have indeed only just reported back from summer vacation, as the Serie A season does not recommence until the end of August. "Bayern will probably be in better shape than us tomorrow," offered Leonardo. "Milan are a top team. I'm intrigued to see how we get on against them at this stage," countered Van Gaal.

The Bayern coach will use the games to continue his team's bedding-in process, and also come to final decisions regarding one or two starting positions for Sunday. "All the players will have the same amount of playing time, but I won't mix things up at this stage, because I need my team to settle down," the Dutch boss said. Jörg Butt will keep goal on one day and Michael Rensing on the other, Van Gaal revealed. Franck Ribéry, Luca Toni and Ivica Olic are all sidelined with injury.

We're ready for it."

Inter Milan 2 - AC Milan 0: Diego Milito goals far from home

Diego Milito scored twice to lead Inter Milan to a 2-0 victory over AC Milan on Sunday in an exhibition that was just the third match the bitter intracity rivals have ever played outside Italy.

The crowd of 42,531 leaned heavily toward AC Milan, and they were quieted in the fourth minute when Milito chased the ball down to the left of the goal and left-footed it between the goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac and the near post. He gave Inter a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute on a 2-on-1 break with Dejan Stankovic, who drew the defender and passed to Milito for the shot that bounced off and over the keeper into the net.

The clubs that share a home in foggy San Siro had met outside Italy only twice: in Chiasso, Switzerland, in 1908 and at Yankee Stadium in 1969. But they came to the United States as part of an exhibition tournament known as the World Football Classic.

AC Milan: from Los Angeles to Boston

The balance of the American tour, ahead of Sunday's derby, is positive for the Rossoneri, who work, experiment, and spend time together. Despite defeats to Club America and Chelsea, the team grows.

Milan's American ended in a draw. At the Home Depot Center, Milan faced David Beckham's Galaxy, after the Englishman paid a visit to his former team mates. The match finished 2-2: on the Di Gennaro-Thiago Silva axis Milan opened the score, but Gordon's equaliser on an assist by Beckham came soon. In the second half Inzaghi took 17 minutes from his entrance to score, but again Gordon (again thanks to the collaboration of the British champion) 'ruined' the Rossoneri's party.

Beckham fined over fans incident

David Beckham has been fined $1,000 (£600) by Major League Soccer (MLS) following his confrontation with a fan during a friendly against AC Milan.

Beckham angered some fans of his LA Galaxy team by missing part of the MLS season while on loan at Milan, and was booed during the game.

At half-time, he approached one group of fans and appeared to challenge them to meet him on the pitch.

Security staff intervened, and police arrested a fan who left the stands. MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a statement: "Our players should never engage in conduct that can be interpreted as encouraging fans to come out of the stands and on to the field, regardless of the reason."

Beckham has insisted he is staying with the LA Galaxy despite the hostile response from some supporters.

He said: "At the end of the day, I play my game, whether I get booed or not doesn't matter to me.

"But I don't like my family seeing that and hearing that (abuse), from an organised group of fans.

"I think it was disrespectful, some of the things that were being said and also some of the banners, but it is what it is."

Beckham, 34, joined Milan on loan because he was keen to satisfy England boss Fabio Capello's demand that he play at the highest level to remain in contention for international selection.

He is England's most capped outfield player, with 112 appearances, and is keen to play on until the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Beckham said he could handle any negative reaction in LA sparked by his attempts to prolong his England career.

"It is not about whether I can move on. To be honest, all I'm going to do is play my football, and as long as it's good enough for myself and the team nothing else matters," he said.

Beckham has a five-year MLS contract, which began in 2007 and allows for him to spend the off-season on loan at a European club.

He added he will be available for England's friendly against the Netherlands in August, if selected.

"Everyone knows that I've always been available for my country whether it be a friendly or a qualifying game, so I'm always available," he said.

"I've spoken to (Galaxy coach) Bruce (Arena) and he's more than happy that if I get called up for my country he and the club totally support that, so it's not a problem."

AC Milan hope of landing another Beckham loan

Milan hope David Beckham will return to the club for five months from January despite the anger of LA Galaxy fans, the Italian club's chief executive Adriano Galliani said on Tuesday.

The midfielder joined Milan on loan last January to stay in the England reckoning and then extended his stay in Italy, missing the start of the U.S. season.

On his return to Los Angeles, he suffered abuse from his own Galaxy crowd and tried to confront angry supporters during the friendly against Milan on Sunday.

"David knows the gates of Milanello (Milan's training ground) are open for him, his lawyers know that too," Galliani told reporters.

"I hope he returns in January. The most probable scenario is that Beckham comes in January until the end of next season and then returns to America. Before January there is no chance."

Beckham has said he wants to return to Europe, and preferably Milan, for another loan stint to make sure he has a chance of an England squad place for next year's World Cup in South Africa if they qualify.
