Kolo Toure could leave Arsenal to City

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Kolo Toure could leave Arsenal to join Manchester City in the next 24 hours.

The 28-year-old defender played for Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Hungary last night but it is thought he is now close to completing a deal, thought to be in the region of £14 million, to move to Eastlands.

Toure would become Manchester City's fifth acquisition of the close season after Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tévez and Emmanuel Adebayor, who was also signed from Arsenal, and would take City's summer spending towards the £100m mark. City are also hopeful for a breakthrough in their efforts to sign Joleon Lescott from Everton.

Wenger has confirmed talks are ongoing and said the picture would be clearer tomorrow. "We will see what's happening in the next 24 hours, nothing is decided yet," he said. "We have seven centre-backs and I am in the position where I have to play some in midfield but of course Kolo is a very good player and we will see what will happen."

Arsenal have signed central defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax and Wenger hinted that he will make more signings before the transfer window closes. "I am more focused on getting everybody fit for the start of the season but we are looking at opportunities as well, there are still some pre-season games to see what we really need. When the time comes we will do something."

Ched Evans goals to Sheffield United

Sheffield United have signed Manchester City striker Ched Evans for £3m, while Ryan France and Keith Treacy have also arrived at Brammall Lane.

Twenty-year-old Evans, who has been capped 10 times by Wales, has signed a three-year deal.

Former Hull City midfielder France, 28, has joined Blades on a two-year deal after a spell on trial at city rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Treacy, 20, has joined on a six-month loan deal from Blackburn Rovers. Blades boss Kevin Blackwell told the club's website he was delighted to have fought off competition for Evans.

"He's a young striker and we are delighted to have won the race for him because there was significant interest in him from two Premiership clubs and two from the Championship," he said.

"We think the lad has a bright future and felt that it was only right to invest some of the money from the sale of two of our star youngsters into the signing of another.

"He is still maturing, still learning the game, so there is more developmental mileage in him which will benefit this club in the long term as well.
"I think our fans will take to him and give him the welcome he needs to help him hit the ground running."

Messi and Tevez to be called by Maradona for Russia friendly

Argentina head coach Diego Maradona said on Friday that he would call up Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez for the friendly match against Russia in Moscow on Aug. 12.

Maradona said, "The match against Russia "is a match of high risk, which we did not want it because it is very close to the match against Brazil, but we have to play it and we are going to play it with dignity."

Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes de La Plata), Mario Bolatti (Huracan), Nicolas Otamendi and Emiliano Papa (Velez) will also be summoned, said Maradona.

Argentina faces Brazil on Sept. 5 in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

Emmanuel Adebayor: Arsenal fans drove me to the exit

Emmanuel Adebayor has accused Arsenal fans of driving him out of the club and into the arms of Manchester City.

Adebayor, 25, became City’s latest high-profile recruit when moving to Eastlands in a £25 million deal on July 18, bringing to an end sustained speculation regarding his future in North London.

A perceived summer of flirtation with both Barcelona and Milan last year provoked long-standing resentment amongst some elements of the Arsenal support and the striker is unhappy at the treatment he received despite the impressive contribution he made in the 2005-06 season.

"The way the fans behaved towards me was not nice at all," said Adebayor. "I can't understand why they were after me. I did my best for them and I was very happy there.

"I scored 30 goals in a season - it's not my fault that Milan, Barcelona or Real Madrid wanted to sign me.

"In any summer, Barcelona try to sign Cesc Fabregas. But the fans never turned on him."

Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, admitted during a shareholders meeting in May that ‘bad feelings’ from supporters had affected the striker who joined the club from Monaco in January 2006.

Manchester City arrange Barcelona test

Manchester City will travel to play Barcelona in a friendly at the Nou Camp on August 19, the club have announced.

City were originally due to play Everton in the Barclays Premier League that night, but the fixture has been rearranged due to the Toffees' Europa League qualifier.

Instead, City will enjoy a meeting with the European champions, playing for the Joan Gamper Trophy.

City, who have met Barcelona five times previously, all in friendlies, last played the Catalan giants when they helped to open the City of Manchester Stadium in 2003.

City beat a side featuring Ronaldinho, Xavi and Andres Iniesta 2-1 with goals from Nicolas Anelka and Trevor Sinclair.
