Celtic goes for Daniel Fox

Celtic are hopeful of signing left-back Daniel Fox from Coventry in time for Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Moscow. The 23-year-old has travelled to Glasgow for a medical, although he has offers from other clubs on the table.

Celtic are in London for the Wembley Cup, and boss Tony Mowbray said he was unsure if the club would manage to sign a player in time for Wednesday. "It'll be touch and go, We're working behind the scenes," Mowbray said.

"There's half a chance that there might be a new name added to our squad list." Englishman Fox has played at the Ricoh Arena for the last 18 months since joining from League One side Walsall.

His performances as he helped Walsall gain promotion the season before also earned him a call-up to Stuart Pearce's England under-21 side.

The Sky Blues fought off stiff competition to land the defender on a three-and-a-half-year contract, and he has since established himself as the leading set-piece taker in the Coventry team.

His form last term led him to be named in the PFA Championship team of the season.
In 2004, Fox also had a spell on loan in Scotland at Stranraer.

"When we will see who has the best squad is when the football starts rolling on the grass"

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray

Celtic host Dinamo Moscow on 29 July in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, with the return leg on 5 August. Mowbray is hoping to see Dinamo live before the game, having already watched them on DVD.

"They are undoubtedly a quality football team with some very good players," he said.
"They are very well organised and are 14 or 15 games into their season, so they are very fit.

"It's a big ask for us so early in our preparations." Mowbray, whose side are preparing for the Wembley Cup on Friday and Sunday, has already signed striker Marc-Antoine Fortune and midfielder Landry N'Guemo from Nancy this summer.

Glasgow rivals Rangers, who knocked Celtic off the top of Scottish Premier League at the end of last season, have made no signings because of financial cutbacks. But Mowbray was not taking it for granted that this would give his club an advantage in the coming domestic season.

"We have lost Nakamura, we have lost Vennegoor of Hesselink, we have lost Hartley," he said. "We have lost some talented players.

"Let's wait and see. When we will see who has the best squad is when the football starts rolling on the grass."

Mowbray praised the previous Celtic regime under Gordon Strachan for the "camaraderie" and work ethic of the players he inherited.

"The squad have shown itself over the last few years that it is a very capable one," said Mowbray, whose Celtic side face African champions Al Ahly on Friday and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

"They have won three out of four SPLs and done well in Europe over the last few years."
