On Saturday, 25 July, AZ cruised past SC Heerenveen 5-1 in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Schaal, the Dutch Super Cup, the annual opener of the Dutch football season. AZ head coach Ronald Koeman had already won the trophy with Ajax in 2002.
The club from Alkmaar, 2008/2009 Eredivisie champions, won their first ever Dutch Super Cup.
According to Infostrada Sports, the 5-1 victory was the joint most one-sided. In 1993, Ajax crushed Feyenoord 4-0. No team had ever scored five times in a Dutch Super Cup match before AZ.
The six goals equalled the most productive JCS match. In 2004, FC Utrecht beat Ajax 4-2.
